Star Fox 64 3D
I first discovered Star Fox 64 quite a while after it came out on the Nintendo 64. I think I might have played it briefly at a friend's house, but one thing I remember for sure - I was immediately mesmerised.
It wasn't until years later that I ended up actually getting the game, having initially gone down the Sega/Sony route console-wise, but boy was it finally worth it.
At that point I'd never have imagined we would one day be able to put that action packed experience in our pocket and play it wherever we want, but here we are.
So does Star Fox 64 translate to the 3DS? I would say yes and it is definitely still worth a look if you didn't experience the original.
First of all, the action is every bit as fast and furious as it always was. The game's many missions will see you blasting and barrel rolling your way through all kinds of hostile environments while collecting powerups and racking up points.
The majority of the action plays out in typical rail shooter fashion, but some areas allow for free flight within a defined area which allows you to decide how to prioitise your targets.
Controls feel smooth, with options for both classic button-based maneuvering as well as gyro tilting, which we'll come back to in a moment.
Sound-wise, the music is just as good as I remember and sound effects are all great, as well as the nice bits of team banter throughout the missions: "hey genius - I'm on your side!"
Getting through the story does not take too long but there are different branching mission paths to discover which keep things fresh, for a few hours at least.
The visuals are very nice on the 3DS and this is one of the few games I actually wanted to play with the 3D turned up a little.
However, like most 3DS games with gyro control functions, tilting just seems incompatible with 3D - how are you supposed to keep the screen at the optimum angle when you're moving it about all over the place? I'd suggest using one or the other.
That minor gripe aside, I have very few criticisms to make about Star Fox 64 3D.
The game does also have a multiplayer mode which I must admit I have not tried, so can't really give a view on that.
All in all I think Star Fox 3D is worth picking up. I guess you could ask if it really needed remaking, and I'd say yes - not because the original needed improving in any way but because there may be people out there who would love the game but may not have an N64 to experience it.
Star Fox 64 3D can be found on Amazon, at the time of writing, for less than £10 second hand - a price which most game shops in the UK seem to be doing as well.
What are your views on Star Fox 64 3D? Do you prefer the original or this version? Are there other Nintendo titles you'd like to see remade? Let me know below!
